Supporting Information for Teachers & How to Enter Guidelines
Creating a group proposal for HIDDEN Rookwood Schools as part of a unit of work
Getting started
Discuss:
- “Responses to Site” and HIDDEN’s invitation for teachers to submit proposals for artworks responding to the context of Rookwood cemetery, such as the cemetery’s contemporary relevance, diverse cultural practices, historical significance, celebration of life, personal stories, or evocative sense of place.
- HIDDEN themes: contemplation, history, culture, remembrance, diversity, love, loss, mourning, spirituality, relationships, memory, community, cycles of life and the passage of time.
- Different cultural practices around death, burial and cremation; this is also an opportunity for talking about death with students and demystify dying and grieving; also consider discussing why these topics are often not discussed, sometimes almost taboo.
Resources
Research the following:
Planning
Ideas:
- Divide class into discussion groups, students to talk about their ideas and the sculpture they would like the class to propose for HIDDEN Rookwood Students. Consider themes, meaning, materials and placement/site. Each group to submit preliminary sketches.
- Each group to share their ideas and sketches with the class.
- As a class decide which idea, or combination of ideas to propose
Proposal
- Decide on title, materials, type of site (i.e. on lawn or under tree)
- Write a description of the work
- Draw proposal sketches (selected site photos can be printed, either draw directly or photoshop onto the photo)
Consider Install Plan:
Imagine installing the work on site and write a step-by-step plan such as:
- Wrap up the works at school and pack into boxes
- Deliver work to site with students
- Hammer stakes into the ground to secure large works
- Unload and unwrap the work
- Place the works next to the stakes
- Secure larger works to the stakes using cable ties
- Place the smaller components around the larger works and attach with cable ties
- Finish and tidy site
