Introducing The New Look HIDDEN Exhibition
Rookwood General Cemetery’s 11th annual sculpture exhibition has evolved, with a new name, new curator and a new student program that has enabled schools to get involved.
Previously known as HIDDEN – A Rookwood Sculpture Walk, HIDDEN Rookwood Sculptures, is an open-air exhibition that features a range of artworks strategically placed throughout the historic Rookwood Cemetery.
This year we have taken the opportunity to rebrand the exhibition and open up the show to a wider number of artists, by creating three unique art categories. Our primary exhibition, HIDDEN Rookwood Sculptures, showcases 35 works with many of the artists expressing a personal connection to the cemetery through their sculptures.
We have also launched HIDDEN Rookwood Students to encourage participation from schools. Rookwood is a trove of history and culture, and by involving students in HIDDEN we are creating an interesting way to share all of this with the younger generation of Sydney.
Finally, we have HIDDEN Rookwood Films, known last year in its augural showing as Flickering Stone, which showcases videography work from talented artists across the country.
To bring HIDDEN 2019 to life, we have also appointed a new curator. Dr. Kath Fries, a well-known artist, researcher and writer, is responsible for HIDDEN’s new creative direction and we’re pleased to see how she has worked with the artists to highlight the beautiful aspects of the cemetery.
Rookwood is one of the last operating Victorian Cemeteries in the world. It is the final resting place for over one million people and features over 350 modern and heritage interment locations. HIDDEN provides the community with a way to learn more about the cemetery by exploring its unique heritage, whilst at the same time supporting the Australian art and tourism industries.
